Graduate Studies
Admission
Graduate applications to the Department of Biological Sciences may be submitted at any time, but the deadline is February 15 for DOMESTIC APPLICANTS and January 31 for INTERNATIONAL APPLICANTS for possible start in August of that year. Applications are reviewed by an Admissions Committee composed of faculty from each of the major departmental research areas as well as a current graduate student. The committee meets once a week from early January through early March, with each application being reviewed in turn as soon as all required materials are received. All of these materials are carefully considered during the review process for each application. Decisions are made on a rolling basis.
The Admissions Committee invites domestic Ph.D. applicants for interviews. Invited domestic Ph.D. applicants are notified immediately by phone and a follow-up letter. They are invited to visit the Department and meet with faculty and current students during a special interview weekend. Interview Weekend will be held February 26 -29, 2009. Invited applicants who cannot make this weekend visit are encouraged to make an individual visit. In either case, the Department will pay up to $300 in travel costs. Housing and meals will be provided.

It is important to note that the Department of Biological Sciences guarantees stipend support to all accepted Ph.D. students for a minimum of 5 years (including summer) as long as they are making satisfactory progress towards their degree and remain in good standing with the program. MS students are guaranteed a minimum of support for two years (does not include summer – but students on average find support).
