General Information/Length of Funding
Graduate study in the Department of Biological Sciences at Purdue University is financed through teaching assistantships, research assistantships, fellowships, traineeships, personal funds, and possible combinations of these sources. This informational material describes the major aspects of these forms of financial support available to graduate students. All regular, full-time, Ph.D. graduate students admitted to our program are guaranteed at least five years financial support (12-month appointments) as long as they are making progress towards their degree and remain in good standing in the program. Master students are guaranteed at least two years of support (10-month appointments) as long as they remain in good standing in the program.
In general, appointments to teaching and research assistantships, traineeships and some assistantships are made by the Department. Other assistantships are awarded through the Graduate School upon recommendation from the Department. Application forms are used as an application for both admission and for financial support. The students themselves apply for fellowships awarded by governmental and other granting agencies and for university residence assistantships.
